IBM/360 & CDC system. Aided in installation of Interact 8.0 Operating System on IBM/360, also would locate security risk by hacking and filing reports on the procedures I used. Primary responsiblity that took only 2 hours out of my 20 hour work week for Academic Computing @ SIUE was maintaining disk packs. Staff/Supervisors took advantage of my extra time and had me aid in the completion of their tasks. This gave me a well rounded knowledge of many aspects of the mainframe.
I wrote Student JCL scripts to run their student assignments and handle printing. Also would handle staff/professor requests for JCL scripts for custom routines. Worked with computer labs in setting up the equipment and installing security protocols and integration. Created student terminal interface screens for various classes. Handled training of computer lab personal.
Substituted for Computer Operators in monitoring mainframe activity and authorizing requests, also mounting tapes. As operator we would reboot the system from 4 large shoe boxes filled with index cards. Those were the days.
Worked with other academic workers and staff to handle data transfer/communications between CDC & IBM 360 (primarily theiry byte orders are reversed and encoding of numbers is different (these are called bridges now).
Assisted State records staff in completing some of their complex ClassIDMS JCL duties. SIUE maintained for DMV, Police, Grades, and other state agencies. Automted them and gave them JCL to standardize printing to the new XEROX laser printer as large as my stove in my kitchen.
Taught various Adult Computer related classes about the Mainframe. SAS, SPSSX, REXX, FORTRAN, COBOL, PASCAL, and JCL. These classes were for any adult, the JCL ones were primarily for Staff & Teachers on how to utilize the new OS systems on IBM/360.
At a manufacturing software development company I got to work with and write software for the AS/400 a mini-mainframe. IBM/360 took up the space the size of my house. The AS/400 was the size of my dishwasher. Times change. JCL and many OS features were quite similar as prior experience so the transition was quite easy.
